Butrint is outside of Saranda, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was an ancient city throughout Greek, Roman, bishopric and Byzantine periods. The city was finally abandoned during the Middle Ages perhaps due to the marsh surrounding and subsequent malaria epidemic.

The current archaeological site includes a Roman amphitheater, a Byzantine Basilica (the largest in the world after Hagia Sophia in Istanbul), a Roman temple with mosaic floor, a carved lion's gate as well numerous constructions built throughout the periods. Unfortunately, I and my new Spanish friends met at Sarandë bus stop saw just 15% of what lies beneath. — checked in to Butrint Heritage Centre.

My Spanish friends had to go back early to Sarandë to catch a ferry back to Corfu, so I traveled with a retired Australian couple to the village of Ksamili that has a beautiful beach with several small islands to swim to. The water was too cold for me to swim so I just dipped in once. We had fresh and tasty sea bass for lunch then walked around to take photos. We had fun time there, and they invited me visit them in Australia. The bus from Sarande serves both Ksamili and Butrint. — checked in to Ksamil Beach.
