I ate breakfast with ocean view and took a short hike to see views of the other side of the village, then took a local bus to Corfu old town to walk around the old fortress, which is a united nation heritage site. Built by the Venetians in 1546 on the site of a Byzantine castle, the fortress is separated from the rest of the town by a moat. Its two peaks ("korypha") gave the island its name. To the west, there is a gorgeous view of the town and to the east the mountainous Albania coast. Most of the Venetian fortifications inside were destroyed by the British, who replaced them with their own structures, like the Church of St. George. I was lucky to persuade a cafe owner to store my big backpack there while touring around the town. The new port was a bit big to find where to buy the ferry ticket to Albania, but I found it after one bound mile with all my backpacks.
