We returned back to the north side of Venice and checked out the Jewish Ghetto of Venice. Venice's ghetto was the first "ghetto" (coming from a Venetian word for the Iron Foundry that was on the site previously) and "ghetto" eventually came to mean any neighborhood that was made up of a single ethnic/racial group. Today, Jewish life is still very active in the ghetto, and we saw three synagogues in the neighborhood. I took about 5 Jewish walking tours last trip in Eastern Europe, and quite into jewish history. We thought the street car would get back to B&B but ended up at the Mastre center, so ran 1 mile back to pick luggage for a high speed train ride to Florence. — checked in to Jewish Ghetto, Venice.
