Things to do in Ohrid include enjoying the lakefront and seeing several ancient ruins, medieval monuments, and Ottoman constructions in the vicinity. I enjoyed the whole lake views from Tsar Samuil’s Fortress. Near the Center of Ohrid is the Ancient Theatre – an open-air Hellenistic-style theatre that was built around 200 B.C. with a capacity of 4,000 spectators. During Roman times it was used for gladiatorial battles for executing Christians, leading to its abandonment after the fall of the Roman Empire. — checked in to Lake Ohrid.
Ohrid is the eighth-largest city in Macedonia and one of the most-visited places in the country and often regarded as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans,” for its many churches (365 in total). I went inside to see Frescos of the Church of St. Sophia (Sveti Sofia), which was originally the cathedral church of the Ohrid Archbishop of the Byzantine Empire, giving it religious authority of the region. I also paid to get in st. Bogorodica Perivlepta which was built and painted in 1295 dedicated to Virgin Mary, including Lamentation of Christ, painted with many emotions, Virgin Mary is about to faint, a woman next is holding her, women are pulling their hair from pain in disbelief, on the right notice a woman acting reasonably and trying to stop another from pulling her hair, angels above the whole scene are crying, in the left corner notice a group of women doing what normal people do gossiping about what happened. I also visited the St. John church which stands on a cliff over Lake Ohrid. These frescos were more colorful than those I saw in Armenia.
