A group of three of us took bus to Rila monastery and only two stayed overnight for 2nd day 8 hr 1500 meters gain hike. It is a united nation designated heritage site and the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria situated in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m (3,763 ft) above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila(876 - 946 AD). It was nice to walk in the monastery when the tourists were gone and soaked in the surroundings on our own. We asked a tall monk about a painting on the wall of Saint michael. — checked in to Manastir Rila.
