A
bunch of us from the same hostel took the free walking tour together.
Veliko Turnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and has
long traditions in the culture of Bulgaria. Unfortunately, a big
earthquake distorted most of its historical buildings, so it has less to
show off comparing with Plovdiv. However, it's mountain views are
unbeatable by other Bulgarian cities. The city is divided into an old
and new parts. The old city itself is a collection of traditional
renaissance houses scattered over the hills around the river Yantra and
the new part consists of a mixture of communistic and modern style
buildings. — checked in to Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.
We
visited the castle of the old Bulgarian capital - Tsarevets in the
90+F. Tsarevets is a mediaeval stronghold located on a hill in Veliko
Tarnovo. It was settled in the 4th century and a Byzantine fortress was
constructed near the end of the 5th century. On the top of the hill is
the patriarchate, a complex with an area of about 3000 m2, whose church,
built on the grounds of an Early Christian one, was reconstructed in
1981 and painted in 1985. The frescoes inside depict the glorious and
tragic moments of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom — checked in to Veliko Tarnovo, Tsarevet.
