Prilep is in the Western Macedonia, nicknamed "The city under Marko’s towers" (referring to the fortress). The city is the Macedonian tobacco capital and has a strange bare scenery with huge rocks scattered around. The city was the capital of the medieval kingdom of Kings Volkasin and Marko. Prilep has a small, pleasant and well maintained bazaar, and of course, churches. — checked in to Prilep.

I had a day trip to Prilep (45 min bus ride) to do an interesting 7-km hike from Marko’s Towers to the Treskavec Monastery, which is used for annual trail running race. I saw Marko’s Towers from the bus terminal and simply walked my way there by asking people for "Markovi Kuli". From the well-worn trail I saw many interestingly shaped rocks, and views over Prilep and the surrounding valley. The Tower site was originally a Roman settlement and the visible structures all date from the 14th century and the reign of Marko Mrnjavčević, King of Serbia, who was based in Prilep. The fortress was abandoned with the arrival of the Ottomans. Unfortunately, I turned back at about 1.5 km from the Monastery for the handrails on the rocks. I did not want to do it by myself. I saw four trail runners earlier, but they were far away at that point.
